D23 started last weekend and showcased many exciting announcements from Star Wars, Marvel, and Disney. Bleeding Cool had the opportunity to attend the event in person, with the Editor-in-Chief covering it. Kaitlyn Booth Immersing oneself in the whirlwind of all things Disney. A particular highlight was engaging once again with the Disney Lorcana group to explore the rapid success of their popular Trading Card Game. We had a conversation with them. Ryan Miller , Disney Lorcana I am a brand designer. Steve Warner Kaitlyn, the Lead Game Designer, discussed the success of the game. Kaitlyn has been involved since the game was first introduced a couple of years ago, and as of August 2023, the game has released five expansions. How does it feel to return to the place where you first started this journey, witnessing the response, and interacting with fans who enjoy playing Disney Lorcana? What has the overall experience been for you all?
Ryan expressed feeling a mix of emotions as he revisited a place full of memories from before the show began. He experienced some anxiety about the uncertain outcome, whether they would be successful, fail, or land somewhere in between. Reflecting on their positive reception two years ago, he found comfort in hearing stories from various individuals who were also present at that time.
Ryan mentioned that he recently had a conversation with a delightful woman named Rachel. They had spoken two years prior, and at that time, he couldn’t reveal details about the gameplay, but expressed his enthusiasm. Rachel ended up enjoying the game, and they even played it together. Ryan finds these types of stories to be enjoyable and exciting.
Steve expressed his amazement at the rapid growth and success of their game, noting how it started in a small booth and has now become fan-driven. He finds it surreal to see people cosplaying their characters and getting tattoos, as it was something they had talked about two years ago but never imagined would actually happen.
You are gradually introducing various gameplay features with each new chapter, which helps players understand the game at a deeper level. Can you provide a hint about any upcoming mechanics that players can look forward to?
Ryan mentioned a new mechanic named Bruno, but he prefers not to discuss him.

Ryan mentioned that Oswald is included in the next set as part of the D23 Collection. The set is intended to celebrate the first year of Disney Lorcana, featuring one card from each of the first five sets. Additionally, the next set will have a Preview Card of Oswald (The Lucky Rabbit), as a way to build anticipation.
