Over the weekend, D23 began with a series of exciting reveals, including fresh previews for Star Wars. Skeleton Crew , sneak peeks of future Marvel Comics, and a lot of entertaining Disney content. Fortunately, Bleeding Cool had a presence with the Editor-in-Chief at the event. Kaitlyn Booth I had the opportunity to immerse myself once more in the thrilling hustle and bustle of the event. One of the memorable moments was reconnecting with the Disney Lorcana team to discuss their successful and expanding Trading Card Game. We had a conversation with Ryan Miller Graphic designer and branding specialist. Steve Warner , Lead Game Designer and Co-Designer, share insights on the game’s growth in the last year. They delve into the various demographics they have encountered and the enjoyable aspects of catering to a wide range of players, from casual card collectors to competitive enthusiasts.
Have you been encountering many new fans at this event? Can you tell me about the characteristics of the people visiting your booth and the conversations you’re having?
Around a quarter of the individuals I encounter here are either experienced players or beginners. The remaining individuals are usually introduced to the game by their families, many of whom are playing a trading card game for the first time. I find it heartwarming when people express their excitement about trying something new. For instance, I recently saw a family spanning three generations who all engaged in the game together. This kind of bonding experience is what makes our community special, as it revolves around bringing people together. Tabletop games have a unique charm in creating lasting memories and being part of such moments is truly delightful.
You have a diverse player community consisting of casual players, competitive players, and collectors who are attracted to the beautiful artwork. With such a wide range of people collecting and playing cards for various reasons, would you consider any changes in how you introduce these products to the market?
Ryan expressed his appreciation for the variety of trading cards available, explaining that there are options to cater to different interests such as Disney fans, hardcore gamers, and collectors. He highlighted the inclusivity of trading card games, emphasizing the effort put into ensuring diversity in each set. Additionally, he commended Steve’s team for their success in creating numerous competitive decks for tournaments.

Ryan is interested in exploring ways to enhance and improve this section’s discussions on art and collectibility. In my opinion, what matters most is that we prioritize getting things done correctly rather than being proven right. This involves continuously refining our work through iterations, receiving feedback, and striving for improvement with each attempt. One of our main focuses is constantly seeking ways to improve. We strive to enhance our work by making it more enjoyable and engaging through ongoing discussions and brainstorming sessions.
